New TEDx Speakers Announced
July 25, 2016It is with a genuine sense of pride and anticipation that we preview two more of the dynamic speakers committed to TEDxGeorgeSchool, scheduled for Saturday, December 3, 2016. Our focus this year is on innovative practices across the scientific, visual design, and entrepreneurial landscapes. The program will feature twelve diverse and exciting presenters, as well as a series of action breaks that will afford a chance for a variety of hands-on experiences. Dr. Joseph Ravenell ’92 will speak about his innovative approach to clinical practice. Joseph is a current recipient of the Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to study a physician-level intervention to improve global cardiovascular risk in black men. In parallel with developing unique expertise in multi-level cardiovascular and cancer research, Joseph is a leader in hypertension clinical care and training and has pioneered the practice of taking hypertension screening out to African-American barber shops in New York City. Dr. Kanani Titchen is Chair of Physicians against the Trafficking of Humans, as well as an obstetrician at Jefferson Medical College. When human sex trafficking was identified as an issue by the American Medical Women’s Association, Kanani studied the knowledge that health care providers had about the problem and found that an intensive educational process was needed. She has dedicated a good deal of her professional energy to creating a series of educational videos and an interactive website so that information about this tragic problem could be shared across the medical community. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.) About TED TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to “Ideas Worth Spreading.” Started as a four-day conference in California almost 30 years ago, TED (Technology, Education, Design) has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives.
